Hello and welcome to the Nintendo Switch UK podcast and we have a special we don't get to do these too often but we're very very excited because we've got a Nintendo in the world showcase special Anton.

Anton Winters 0:27

And Dave is not quite the direct we were hoping for but news is news and I think we got a compared to the other and the specials we've had this as a that's some good tales in here this time.

Mike Macdermid 0:38

I was very pleasantly surprised with what we got. And we'll come on to all those in just a moment because there's a lot to get through in a fairly short I was at 20 minutes on

Anton Winters 0:49

it was fairly rapid fire it was game game game like midway through I was expecting them to do that bit where they have to present or walk out and then be like, all right, so you've just seen this big game and Bernie talk about what resolution at Robinson. But no, they just kept on going. And it was fantastic and even five minutes and I was like up, let's make happy. Yeah,

Mike Macdermid 1:08

you're right. You're absolutely right. Five minutes in, I think my jaw dropped. And I think I had to hit pause for a while because I was doing something at the same time. And I just, I just savour the moment, but we'll come on to that in a second. Just a quick reminder, Nintendo Switch UK podcast, if you had to Twitter you can get us there. It's ns UK podcast. By the way, we've got a competition out there should mention that there as well. And we're giving away Tetris 99 with the 12 months subscription. Indeed. And that also comes with the big block DLC, so it isn't just the game you can download online. And as well as that looks really nice on the shelf, and I'm kind of jealous because I had been meaning for myself, and you can't enter I'm afraid. all you've got. All you got to do is retweet it and to follow our page on Twitter if you want to enter in of course if you could subscribe. That would be lovely. You can do that at all the podcast places that you normally get your podcast from and if you want to leave us a review, Apple podcast is probably the best place to go so let's get into it then Anton and it started with a bit of a bang because we are getting oh my goodness the sequel to golf story

Anton Winters 2:10

yeah and first I was like doing some golf story yes DLC had like a different ourselves some like similar art sale but different camp environmental like oh no it's tennis. Oh wait there's tonnes of sports so it's sports sports sorry this time we're getting hasn't a

Mike Macdermid 2:28

sports story and it looks like a little bit more of the same in terms of Goldstone so if you're not familiar with golf story, it's a kind of pixely kind of was it? Eight to 16 bit what would you call it?

Anton Winters 2:38

Uh, yeah, probably like some, like on the early Super Nintendo.

Mike Macdermid 2:42

Yes. But it's beautiful. It's really well made the game The story is you don't have to be a golf fan to play it. In fact, golf is a very small part of the story. So really quirky story. It's a lot of fun. It's about 16 to 20 hours if you want to play through it and unlock everything. Sports story is the sequel. Which obviously introduces more sports than just the golf and I played the whole of golf story absolutely loved it. And this brings in some other sports in there as well. But it's again, they make it clear it's not about the sports necessarily because there's all sorts of stuff happened in that game. And it's just a really really good fun game with nice gameplay good mechanics, and I'm really psyched about this, it's actually mid 2020 which is kind of good because I've got a backlog of games so give me a little bit of time to play through one or two others but

Anton Winters 3:28

I'm quite excited for this one because that the first one it felt very much as well from the offset not having played it looked very much like up as an RPG with cow some old golf many games here. And I was sceptical of how far you could push it because it just seemed like just piling up over and wrote some one random direction. Whereas this having like baseball and tennis and obviously golf celyn they're just add so much more variety in especially when you've got an RPG. I'm going to be curious how much longer and how much farther to go The concept this time or even if the cuz I'm obviously an outsider does it have like recurring characters or Yes,

Mike Macdermid 4:07

it's very strong characters actually and you you start off in your own house and the whole story is you waking up and then you go on this adventure and there's quite distinct levels which is quite nice as well. But within that you've got a lot to do and a lot of people to talk to and it's just a really really nice game that has a lot of quirky moments. There's a kind of underworld level where everything becomes a bit ghostly and a bit weird so don't expect reality is not you know, it's not based in reality. You do have some golf in there too. And some putting in actually probably if I had any criticism is a couple of levels where the mechanics for playing golf were a little tricky and it wasn't tricky because it was good tricky was just annoying, tricky, and I think I'm hoping they've maybe iron iron those out for this one, but honestly, it is a solid eight out of 10 kind of game. You know, it's one that I would recommend to people anyway, if you see on the sale, golf story, and sports story, I'll definitely be joining put onto that when it comes out. So not that long to wait that at some point in 2020 and it was a great start to the showcase and I saw it. I was like, I can't believe it is this is it. It's all downhill from here, but actually, there's a lot more to come.

Anton Winters 5:12

Yeah, I always love seeing a sequel to an end game because with it with a triple A game if you get a sequel to it, it's just like the first game they threw all their money came to Fort and this time they're just throwing all their money on game. Whereas with an independent game getting a sequel on it, which however rare is it's fantastic because you get to see a no budget dream with a little bit of a budget and that makes a world of difference and it's going to be excited to see where it comes from but we were followed by another sequel after that one weren't well

Mike Macdermid 5:41

I sequel and a half this one so Streets of Rage fans you can rejoice because Streets of Rage for is coming out in the first half of 2020. I really like the art style of this. It was it's a little different to maybe what you might be used to in the streets of read rage game. It's got that kind of pop kind of 2d 3d thing going on. But I liked it.

Anton Winters 6:02

Yeah when when they originally unveiled it obviously we just had some loose concept art and I was a little bit hesitant whereas we just go in Sonic Mania which count that the 16 bit 32 bit thing and when you've just got like the simplistic just we've got some art concept art and it's going to be 2d hand drawn and I was a little bit nervous because you hit some games like that it just turns out like a flash game but just something about the light and and the vibrancy of this game it's looking quite stunning I wouldn't say so myself

Mike Macdermid 6:31

Yeah, I think the could have a real good chance because the problem with sequels of games especially games when you go back as far as the Streets of Rage series I think it's the difficulty you get is where do you go do you go for something the same and then it's outdated and it doesn't feel right on our current system because you know, you can't forgive it the same way you can forgive the originals or do you go for something a little bit different so one of the ones that failed with that is double dragon when Double Dragon for came out. For example, I love the Double Dragon seas with double dragon for To be honest It's it's pretty boring, it doesn't really do anything to enhance the CDs, it feels like a game that started being made in 1980. And they never finished it and they're just thrown together. Whereas street search for this looks like from the ground up, they've really thought about how they're going to design it.

Anton Winters 7:15

Yeah, definitely. And it's, it's exciting from the point of view is we get a lot of platformers we get a lot of eight, eight, but sexing, but every variation of RPG you could want. But we haven't had too many of these classic beaten love games on the market. It's amazing how many younger gamers to chat to and it's like, they just haven't played a single one app.

Mike Macdermid 7:37

Yeah, I mean, it was it was literally the the definitive way to game in the late 80s, early 90s, especially in arcades. It was it was everything. I mean, the Simpsons had one for goodness sake.

Anton Winters 7:49

Oh, that was fantastic. But yeah, as well, so 16 here because we're going to finally have people to play with Yes, never played the games were apparently so great for player and I could maybe get one other person to count for struggle for our be spot. Finally I can have the four player Streets of Rage for experience. Oh absolutely I'm looking forward to that next

Mike Macdermid 8:11

up gleam light now, if you are a fan of hollow night, then you'll probably like this The main character I'm going to say in this green light. I've got a question here. There's a character in I think it's I think it's human. Or let me I'm gonna check that I'm sure there's a character in human that looks identical to the greenlight guide. Yes arkell arco from human Look, let me let me just screen share this because you probably don't know who I'm talking about. So so just for those that don't know. We work on on tonnes in Edinburgh and I'm in Aberdeen analysis and Aberdeen usually, so I'm sharing my screen look at article from human hmm and look at Green light. Look at the green light character.

Anton Winters 8:51

Oh, yeah, some calcine No. Yeah, see, I'm still seeing more whole light in this this

Mike Macdermid 8:57

Yes, as a as a style of a game. I think you're up Yeah

Anton Winters 9:00

what what this game look quite good essentially the premise of it as you're playing somebody who's part person part sort and the whole selling point of the game is there's no menus there's no tutorial there's no HUDs and it's all about Calvin naturalistic Calif communication to the player. And it's always come back to like that thing of breath the world where it has to it puts a wall in front of us that's all you have to learn how to claim. Yeah, but they've apparently pushed that to the absolute extreme and a minimalist game style.

Mike Macdermid 9:37

I gotta say it does look, it looks very well done. I think it could be. It looks like it could be quite tricky. That's my first thought when I'm not sure if my frustration can take this but it does look amazing. I guess if you're a fan of, you know, holy night and games like that, you probably probably be quite interested in this. It's a it's actually an early 2020 as well. So it's not that long to wait but Really nice looking game I might be a bit of what's the one inside this is quite a lot of dark

Anton Winters 10:07

pilots in the background so I guess there's a little bit of that maybe too I'm very curious to see where LC go with this game because obviously the whole selling point of it was the fact that it doesn't have tags it doesn't have tutorials and all realness with majority of platformers the camp gameplay so inherent and count for like, standardised that we usually only have like maybe half a level of tutorial and then the rest of the game is just like yet just it gets harder and harder and harder and then so I wonder what's the gameplay gimmicks that they're hoping to deploy was this one?

Mike Macdermid 10:42

Well, we won't have to wait too long early 2020 is when green light is released. Next up, we got bacon switch amazingly, despite the name actually it's out in the PC, but bacon switch is an over overcooked style Co Op game coming in summer 2020. So it's a couch called Green. Essentially it's got it's got potential I'm not sure yet

Anton Winters 11:06

yeah I was looking at and I was really wanting to fall in love with it the team seemed charm and the came out and he did a lot we were there in pastries and stuff like that and I'm like I really do my pastry but nevertheless when I was looking at I'm like this I I never saw anything I want eat like I looked down. I was like, I would much rather play overcooked but also the gameplay did seem a little bit more abstract and overcooked. isn't like you're in a catch and it's more about getting ingredients. It seems like getting little we don't people to feed to some giant monster.

Mike Macdermid 11:42

Yeah, it's it. I'm not sure if it's going to be good. It's got to be overcooked good. Otherwise, people are just going to stick with overcooked to because overcooked has a lot of content. It's been around for a while. My biggest concern with it is that it's too similar to overcook, but not as good. That's Yeah.

Anton Winters 12:00

Yeah, as I was saying, it's just like I would look at him like I would just want overcooked free and But nevertheless, it's I'm almost curious because it's so abstract and it's cooking elements. I wonder if the fact that they're they themed around cooking is going to come to them to detriment because I obviously that's the obvious comparison everyone's going to. Yeah. And I'm realness. The cooking is more like it could literally be a game about Crayola pencils. And they're going out there and collecting Crayola pencils and making the ingredients for it. And it wouldn't be that much different of a game. So I wonder if they may be shot themselves in the foot in terms of their feeling almost?

Mike Macdermid 12:38

Yeah, yeah, I'm not sure. Well, we'll see because it could come out and it could have fantastic reviews on the switch. certainly seems like quite homerun switch if nothing else. Next up at Super Smash. I saw super match, I should say. Super much like the mesh. Yeah, exactly. Well, the thing. The thing is here that I actually quite like this premise. So the idea of this is that you play random generated game by taking two different genres and mashing them together, which I think is fantastic. So in the in the screenshot that I'm looking at here, they've got platformer, and JRPG. So the problem is, I guess, how much of a gimmick is this going to be? Is this going to be one that's going to be great fun the first five times you play and then it's like, okay, it's boring now because I know where it goes.

Anton Winters 13:24

Yeah, this one at first, I was like, Oh, I hate it. And then I was like, Oh, I love it. And then I had a moment to think about I'm like, this could go either way. Because essentially, within all of the the main menu of the game, which is your main central hub, you have two different game, you can pick up two different game cartridges and they've got cart shoes for every genre. You plug them in, and then you've got a randomly generated game. And then as you complete games, you get literally bonus trading cards, which can count add modifier, so you could have a fantasy card, so you could make a simulation, cooking fantasy game. Yeah, I think the question is, is I feel like if this came from a bigger development should you be like yeah, there's gonna have 1000 games in here but I'm I wonder how much so variations goal? Is it? Like, are these trading cards just gonna be rescanning and

Mike Macdermid 14:18

that's what worries me This is that exactly what worries me that the content isn't going to be enough to keep you interested for a long time. There's a second thing that worries me as well as nobody's ever going to be able to find this game because if you google Superman, all you get is Super Smash Bros. Really? It's a nightmare. I've tried several times and everytime is did you mean Super Smash switch there. So they've got an issue there straight off.

Anton Winters 14:41

Yeah, I think this one if there's a larger percentage of a chance that they're going to just miss the mark button that like 20% that the hell the park. They could have something really unique here.

Mike Macdermid 14:56

Yeah, I hope they do. You know, I really hope they do. Because I It's a really nice idea. just wonder if maybe you said you need a big studio to pull something off like that.

Anton Winters 15:07

Yeah, at least one thing I've got to give them credit for when they started explaining the concept and they had the 2d platformers on there. I was like, okay, they're going to be more simplistic genres, and camp in a similar way of the Travis Scott game. And not Travis Scott. The traveller strikes again game, and not the rapper Travis Scott, of course. Yeah, no, but nonetheless, I felt be simplistic in that way. But there they had like some freedy games in there. There were say a decent bit of right in there, which surprised me and yeah, so fingers crossed for the future there.

Mike Macdermid 15:38

Yeah, we'll keep an eye on it and it comes out in May 2020. A game that you will not have to wait for a tall because it's, it's out today. And from devolver Digital as well. It's the talus principle Deluxe Edition. It's a first person puzzler. It looks really really nice.

Anton Winters 15:58

Yeah, I remember when it came. It came to ps4 a couple years ago and I believe it's created by the same developers Bastion. And it has a there is a deep rooted philosophy philosophical message that goes underneath the whole game. But at the core of it it looks like a simple fun platformer. Yeah and and I kept looking at reviews that seems to be well regarded.

Mike Macdermid 16:24

Yeah. And they talked about having 120 immersive puzzles which which is certainly keep me going for a while and a stunning world and I have to say that the world does look very impressive. They've done a good job of the kind of landscape of it and it's probably worth worth checking out because it's kind of hard to you know, is this more puzzlers is more platform what what's the I mean, I think it's mostly first person saw puzzling, I think more than anything, but it's hard to tell without having having played it.

Anton Winters 16:53

Yeah, it looks to be a lot of moving objects and like a 3d space count like the Yeah, it reminds me of home. You would do some light puzzle elements and half life two but a little bit yes further along Yeah, but I'm curious I haven't checked east or so this one was a good price could be a good purchase I know on the Oculus it can go for fairly cheap so

Mike Macdermid 17:16

well I was looking there they may only found the American store on look to the on my switch today but it was 2029 $99 which worries me slightly have to say I think that much but

Anton Winters 17:29

I've passed on it for four pounds VR. Oh no. Oh,

 Mike Macdermid 17:34

pricing can really go wrong sometimes. I'll try and see see if I can get a price on it. I think it's one again that you probably want to go and have a look at and and see what you know what whether it's something that is really going to take your fancy because the thing is about it. It's it's probably something that some people absolutely love if you love puzzles and you're probably going to be quite into this because you know, it's a nice world and all the rest of it, but it's a lot of money. It's a lot of money to have There

 Anton Winters 18:02

you could buy several games in that list this list and still have no people to buy that

 Mike Macdermid 18:07

was 29 $99 I can't find the UK equivalent but usually it's not far off next up then so forth it's it's a bit like windwaker and Black Flag if they had a baby I think you're absolutely spot on because as soon as I saw this I thought oh, they've animated Black Flag.

Anton Winters 18:23

Yeah, it looks gorgeous. It does have that count very flat to the art sale with some sailing, pirate fighting, which considering we've been waiting years for Ubisoft pirates at and I know so many people got really hooked on there the ceiling combat and Black Flag this might be the title for them.

 Mike Macdermid  18:41

Yeah, it's it's it does look really really nice. I must admit, I think if you That was your thing, then you probably want to check this out because it's it's animated. He said WinWaker is a good description. It's got that kind of sort of that era of Luke to it with the elements of black flag in it. The ceiling looks good. It looks good. Well done it's coming 2020 have high hopes that this will be a bit of a hit.

Anton Winters 19:05

Yeah I'm really excited to see some more in depth gameplay and this one that they had Kaffir more atmosphere trailer so far. Yeah. They kind of hinted towards the combat and and i'm curious because I'll say that one of the appeals of the few pirate games that we've had in the past with it whether it be C of thieves or Assassin's Creed is jumping across and going across yeah so at it as what they've headed towards that doesn't appear to be an aspect in this game so I think even that alone account having a pure Libyan the ship combat part of it could add a lot because quite often wife Sea of Thieves it's just you can of course so by say the nine year jump off and it's hacking and slashing

Mike Macdermid 19:46

Well, the funny thing is with see if he's always been one that I've quite fancied, although it's obviously you know, Xbox, but I quite like those kind of games. I was quite into the Sid Meier's pirates game back in the day. So I might, I might check this out. I'm going to I'm going to be playing blindfold So my only thought is, if I'm playing Black Flag and I can get them all singing a sea shanty while I'm sailing the seven seas, then uh, maybe I won't want to play this as well. But it is quite different to that in the sense that it's a very different sort of art style. It's obviously different focus, so worth checking out. It's not come until 2020. Anyway, so bit of time. Next up again, you do not have to wait for and it's also free to play. So again, I'm kind of intrigued to play this because it does get well reviewed. My biggest concern is always How are they cashing in on people? What is the what's the money system like, but it's a game called dauntless. And they kind of described as a bit of a monster hunter style game, but I think it looks great. It's well reviewed. It's already out on other systems has been for a while and the switch gets it for free and you can download it now on

 Anton Winters 20:48

Yeah, I think if you're somebody who's never gave the monster or format of games, go before game to play account, the free to play stripped down version obviously it's no out one to one comparison. And maybe a good way to enter and worst case scenario free to play, you have nothing to lose and it it looks fairly pretty account for me to be like it's for fortnite calibre graphics which obviously that's epic studios so yeah decently high bar to be achieving have a special on switch,

Mike Macdermid 21:15

it's got that paladins Overwatch kind of aesthetic to which I guess, you know, is quite common in the free to play kind of genre, but it's well done. It looks solid. Yeah, fortnight, I guess is a good is a good comparison as well. He's certainly very well reviewed him. And I've had a look at a couple of reviews today. And, you know, some of the big sort of reviewers are given us a journey and a half at 10, which for a free to play game is good. And they seem to not not see that the sort of transaction side is too bad. It seems like you can still play that game without having to spend money. And that's always a good thing when it's free to play. But there's the option there.

Anton Winters 21:49

Yeah, I think we've finally started to hit a nice plateau and the gaming industry where we had a good solid years of companies getting creepier and creepier and creepier. Having a local point with Star Wars Battlefront two and then slowly creeping up to an acceptable level Yes This has been a while since we've had a scandal about that thankfully so fingers crossed for the base was this one

Mike Macdermid 22:11

yeah absolutely I think if you you know if you want to spend some money in these games that's fine it's just when you know when does the only way to play it that's the problem I think it was the asphalt nine thing was my my concern because I what I felt like with that free to play recently, it felt like you really need to spend money to actually get anywhere which was slightly frustrating but anyway, check it out is I don't know next up murder by numbers. And this is a new murder mystery. I've got to say, I really liked the animation and the cool thing about this is got some of the same team that did some of the Phoenix right thing. I think the music's the Phoenix rate team as far as I remember. I love those games. So I was surprisingly was like, I might check this out.

Anton Winters 22:51

Yeah, when I saw this one, I was really curious get yourself and eventually answers false and it close it. It does have like an all star Our team of developers in it Sam as I've mentioned on the podcast I'm yet to play a professor leading game properly and Bob Kalfa animation looks good some of the writing seems quite what a the characters seem Calif unique and defined. And yeah it looks really polished and for such a kind of non popular genre to help come out here with something that's so appealing to an outsider and I could only imagine what people here have fallen off the genre must think of this game.

Mike Macdermid 23:34

Yeah, well, it's got story elements and it's got you know, it's also got some Sudoku type elements in it as well which looks quite fun. The music is the is Martha katsu. signori, who's the guy behind Phoenix right and also beautiful job which is another really well reviewed game and as well as that the designer is hotter, more who did hotter fall boyfriend, which is another title, that you can see that now when you look at it, you can sort of see the similarities, but now he looks really, really good and Again, I just the theme through this whole direct for me was really strong in the titles and kind of surprising almost.

Anton Winters 24:09

Yeah, quite often, like I remember especially with before, it was the envy world when it was a nice event. There was a couple of games in there where you're like, Whoa, I don't really think this is for the big stage presentation. But and here I'm some of these games they showed off today, especially with this one. It's like, you could pass that off in a big Phil, right? Like, maybe not as the headliner, but as a passing mention, and when I've seen our place and yeah, it just generally looks quite impressive and I think the thing is really accessible. This one I said does have the puzzle elements actually see it's kind of like when I looked at account reminded me almost this main sweet, pure, essentially poking pixels in a wall. It's not mainstream. Sadly. No, no, absolutely. Adding that extra layer to the gameplay. So isn't just a visual novel goes a long way. Definite Yeah,

Mike Macdermid 25:00

I agree. Absolutely, I'm definitely going to be able to look at this. Next up is a really interesting release because this is a game that was originally released on the Xbox and actually was seen as a bit of a failure because it didn't reach its commercial targets only sold 600,000 copies by 2012 and came out in 2005. But the thing was that they were trying to sell 1.6 million so it didn't even sell half of what they were aiming for. So they saw is a really bad release, and they blamed they blamed it on his marketing of the game at the time. But here's the thing. So the game is called oddworld strangers wrath HD, it's an Xbox classic third and first platformer slash shooter, it's coming January 20 2020. But here's the thing it was reviewed really, really well actually won a bunch of awards from magazines and people were sort of saying, you know, one of the best games of the year and, and it just never quite got hit the heights, but on the switch, it was you know, it could be a whole new audience,

Anton Winters 25:53

you know, and I'm going to come out here I played the original back on the original leg. Excellent up on Subsequent consoles and it's an absolutely fantastic tale our lovely title so happy you said that felt a charm. The Old World universe had several games on ps1 and had

Mike Macdermid 26:11

one so this is the age Odyssey and all that. And

Anton Winters 26:14

indeed Yes. Okay, same universe,

 Mike Macdermid 26:16

so I know that universe quite well from the police station Juanita.

Anton Winters 26:20

Yeah, this is very much careful if you had that universe and then went off and did something as a Western within that universe with the characters that help demick solve it, and you're not actually shooting projectiles you're shooting these little weak creatures. I can't remember their names but yeah, you're essentially shooting them and each kill different animal that you shoot has a different ability so you could have a spiky one you could shoot a skunk to like get all the enemies to scatter Oh, I really fantastic tale. However, sadly, and when I as I've mentioned, I've picked this up several times. I think I paid 30 pounds on the original Xbox brand new when it came to the PSP on ps3 at Cost nine pounds when it came to the ps4 it was 15 pounds they're charging the full 30 pounds here I've even bought my waist for night up and then they're coming out here and asking for so much really stings a lot with considering them repeat customer I'm like stacks

Mike Macdermid 27:17

that's that that's a real shame because that was gonna be my neck my next question was going to be it's all about the price point and that that's going to decide whether or not I'm going to jump in because I really want to play this game no because you know like the audible universe I love what you've said but I think the reviews are great a look stunning for a game from 2005 on Xbox. It looks amazing.

Anton Winters 27:37

Yeah, it's it's a weird one for me because to be honest, if I hadn't picked bought this game, for as little as 90 p before, brand new, I would be happy to pay that 28 pounds for yet as a very solid game. But does skill set in a very similar ballpark is called call of wireless. Yeah. Which was those two games? I think maybe picking up cold virus and seeing if this game gets a more appropriate price drop maybe something on the card, but yeah, if it seems up your alley, definitely give it a go. So I

Mike Macdermid 28:15

mean, it looks fantastic. I must admit, I've got on the list of ones to watch actually, there's not many on the list. I'm not intrigued by this Tara and it's funny because I think that's the first time Normally I'm picking two or three know that they're the standards for me, obviously sports story straightaway and we'll come to our standards at the end. But this next one I have to say is probably one of the cutest looking games I have ever seen those little birds inscape birds 2020 My goodness, I could just have a go that game and just you know laugh at how cute they are because they are adorable. But I don't know if the game is going to be any good. What do you think?

Anton Winters 28:50

I'm, yeah, this one. At first. I was like, Oh, that looks a little gimmicky. And then I was like, Oh no, this looks this looks like some dumb fun. It doesn't look like something you take too seriously. It's kind of an isometric skateboarding game. If you can't imagine the earlier Gameboy Advance 20 halt GameSpot. Yeah, with a bigger account budget, they don't have to limit themselves. And you get you can have skate around in your reward for completing challenges as you unlock more lo fi songs which had me already.

Mike Macdermid 29:23

It's great and the arts really not. I think they've got they've absolutely nailed the little birds perfectly. I think they're absolutely ideal. They look really good. They've got little sort of gestures that they do and the way they move is just perfect. And every little jump, I was like, Oh, that's so cute. Six ridiculous.

Anton Winters 29:39

It's exciting because I think that amazing how many versions of skateboarding there as for like 12 vaguely, can have a lot of soccer games are very similar. Yeah, a lot of American football games are very similar. But with skateboarding, we have games like Ali Ali. We have games like skin Bird, scoot karela scoot, we have Tony Hawk and ski are completely different. Yeah, and it's interesting to see some of the comments such explored genre and kept to something a little bit different. It's fun to see

Mike Macdermid 30:12

no, it's great. So that's coming in 2020 I have to say it looks phenomenally fun But have a look for yourself as I said, we don't know what not sure about the gameplay yet but it looks like it's fairly solid. I have to say that the the birds are just the best thing I've seen in a while and again, next up liberated which is a comic book inspired narrative platformer with shooter elements this looks very stylish.

Anton Winters 30:36

Yeah, this reminded me of srei of 1994 with comics on on the mega dry Swan again when I saw that I'm like oh my god only if we got a new comics on what the Streets of Rage RS and deliberate team but this one's a lot darker would appear at Calif Oh, yeah, it seems like you know when you get those edgy Batman comics you seem more songs and you just have blood everywhere. Yes, this one Like,

Mike Macdermid 31:00

and the thing is that I am quite a fan of comics, you know and playing the Batman games the telltale one it's got that real comic style it's also based off obviously based more on this comic Batman and I love that kind of dark Newmar style and has that no wire element to it, but it's also got the real stylish kind of comic book elements just looks really really good. I'm interested to see what what it's like in terms of reviews and what it's actually like to play but you know, as a game to look at, it's up there with some of the better looking ones I've seen from an indie developer.

Anton Winters 31:34

Yeah, I'm Likewise I really want to see more of what it does with the camp comic panels. We saw a lot of clips of some shooting camp with and singular panels or something like dialogue a dialogue between a couple panels but we never saw how the Caliph navigating around mobile panels count worked and I thought that was gone back to comments on that was one of the things I loved enough. So we've never got a secret that so I'd love to see if they do anything like that obviously, back then that was very much yet we can have four frames animation of the moving between frames. Yeah, but what's this anything's possible technology?

Mike Macdermid 32:10

Absolutely. Well let's look out for that's coming in 2020 and next that we have boyfriend dungeons this one or 2% sure about it. So it's a dungeon crawler slash dating sim.

Anton Winters 32:25

Yeah, very much in the vein and tone of dream daddy. And Sam. Yeah, the kneeler elements seemed standout. I've Yes, the combination which they're they're really trying to sell home here. Yeah, that's fun. I don't know.

Mike Macdermid 32:48

The thing is, as you say that but you know, there's nothing wrong with either element to it. I think it's a good idea. You know, combining them cool, but I think they're going to have to be pretty good at what they do on both sides. Otherwise, you could end up with a mediocre idea. Gaming a mediocre mediocre dungeon crawler?

Anton Winters 33:03

Yeah, cuz the capital hole because they had the developer count discussing it. And it was, they didn't really see much beyond this, like all Have you ever been wanting to play a dungeon crawling RPG and then do something that was

Mike Macdermid 33:20

as always we heard it's a very odd combination, but it's one again to keep an eye on and when it comes will, you will be able to sort of decide whether or not it's one that we would recommend it is coming in 2020 with HD rumble support. There you go. I did that in there too. Next up dreams scaper. Look, again, quite stylish. I have to say there's interesting description to this. And I know we've had a few games like this that sort of tackle more serious subjects, but they talk about playing as Cassidy who's a young woman in grappling with depression which manifests manifests as the nightmares you explore. I think that's a really interesting premise. So it's a roguelike which is adds a different element to it in the dream world again, Because I guess if you ever gonna have a roguelike dreams are probably as close as you could get. Because you never know what's gonna happen next in your dream I guess.

Anton Winters 34:07

Yeah that the key aspect of the gameplay that really enticed me was the fact that in the trailer they discussed how in the real life you go around and you chat to people and universe and you can pick up things from the real world that you can then use in your dreams. I think combined thing almost like a Rogue Legacy cell of game with the cow dialogue and daytime sexual persona seems like a dream come true almost. At the thing I've always felt sad about persona is they have endings like having that just going about your daily life. That is such a count thing and when your account confined to the deadlines of progressing the main narrative forward but not want to damage your let we'd like your boat for you.

Mike Macdermid 34:54

Oh that confused the heck out of me for for playthroughs of persona. For not for When I was playing, I was good. Why? Why am I Oh, you kidding me all that time was spent and I had to do it in a certain, you know, and I get it and it's kind of fun in its own way but at the same time I know what you mean it sometimes is a bit kind of restrictive.

Anton Winters 35:12

Yeah, so I think this here seems like a really great iteration on the formula where which one account gives you the freedom to breathe and enjoy yourself. Daytime section says less of an add on to the main game. But also, I feel like it encourages you to put possibly dependent on how the mechanics are built to grind forward. if let's say, hanging out working the skill count increases your intelligence that you have more motivation to do that for 50 hours of real game, rather than just doing it for the bare minimum you need to progress or Absolutely.

Mike Macdermid 35:48

Well ladies coming on nearly 2020 and it's a time to switch console exclusive apparently so quite sure. I'm assuming that means we get it first maybe. But it's one to look out for next up there. And we're almost at the end of the games. We've got two more to go but the survivalists now if you have played The Escapist, I think I have The Escapist, and there's escapist two as well as, and they're the one I've got, I've got both of those games. quite tricky, but I haven't really spent enough time to sort of get into them properly. But this is a similar kind of game from the same developers. But this time, it's more to do with combining resources and surviving and commanding a legion of monkeys, which I think is ridiculous, but it's kind of like the art style.

Anton Winters 36:30

Yeah, it reminded me like totally if you've ever played sport when you get up to the primitive civilization stage where you're Calif, you've got other tribes and stuff like that. So you start from the level of just like sticks and stones and trees and gang Darren making mud bricks and just doing all that kind of ground up work, and just simply surviving and growing your camp and get a monkey's. This game could be a lot of fun and obviously Team 17 have such a great track. Courage courage going back all the way towards and lemmings which we need on our landings but that's a story for a different day. Yes it is.

Mike Macdermid 37:08

But no, it could be good I think so I think this is going to go to do really well and if they come up with a nice physical version as well that would be good because the The Escapist, too I think is the one I have physically I think about Escape is one digit thinks it was down to like 499 in the store, but you want to check out it's the survivalists and again, that's coming 2020 then we had the one more thing, which we talked about sequels, and so on, and this is a big one because the first game in this series is so well reviewed, so well revered people love it. It's a it's a stunning looking game. Tell us what this one was.

Anton Winters 37:43

Yes. So after four years of development, we're finally getting a sequel to axiom bureij coming up autumn 2020 and it looks to have evolved to a 16 bit aski setec so your account classic Metroidvania sale gameplay Going for these massive tab burns and count sprawling maps at Luke's I have a little bit more advanced technology feeling going on. Yeah, but it generally looks quite gorgeous and it hasn't done anything quite eccentric, you can just tell a lot of carriers being put into the pixel art of this one. He

Mike Macdermid 38:21

just reminds me so much of a Mega Drive game looking at the screenshots, it reminds me of what they might have done know if they had the capabilities to push the Mega Drive to the limit. It looks like that to me more so than a snez actually gives me more of that kind of Sega kind of era vibes, but it looks great. I haven't played Axiom Verge, but I know it's so well talks about that. I know this is really exciting for a lot of people who have played the first one and it's out on in autumn 2020. So a bit of time to wait but you've waited four years I don't think waiting too long term as a big deal.

Anton Winters 38:52

Yeah, there's this again goes back to what I was saying about camp, sports story as we had a game that fundamentally was so strong at his core and it was a no budget dream. And this time we're getting the budget to make it look and sound and play gorgeous. And there. I think for a lot of people who can't maybe go 10 minutes because the other game has that count Undertale it's kind of ugly, but you learn to love it a sec. Yeah. Where's this one as gorgeous from the offset, and I imagined once you get invested in the capital, the labour the scale of a game that says, Yeah, it could be a real hit for a lot of people.

 Mike Macdermid 39:29

Right, then let's review what your standouts were of this particular indie direct what were your kind of two or three Sundays?

Anton Winters 39:40

Oh, yeah, I'm a little bit upset about the pricing. Old World strangers wrath HD has to be up there. Yep. I think if I hadn't picked up like four ports already and just played the original Xbox One, I would be mind would be on the wall. Yeah, I'd be up sparf splatfest Oh, water one student doing skateboard I feel like that one could be a very appropriate one Yeah, like appropriately like a nice titles pickup and the survivalists I've never I've been tempted to pick up the escapist games. I've always been hesitant they're hard and yes a bit of a learning curve. So the fact that this game is a little bit more open ended and it doesn't just count making itself harder because you can't just have you escaping in the first five minutes. Yeah, I've having that open to end element to it makes me excited to give the Escapists universe as they call it. Let me taste Spa pulpo yourself make

Mike Macdermid 40:38

and well so first of all, golf story sports story absolutely no doubt. Because I have raved about golf story. It was one of the first games I fully completed on the switch and absolutely loved it. So that's for me is is up there. I'm very very intrigued to play oddworld strangers wrath because it's not one I've ever played and I like the old world world. Again, the pricing thing is an issue. So it may be negates that. But again, I agree with you escape birds 2020 I think that is fantastic. There's a lot of really good fathers very few there that I'm kind of like no, it's not a good title, but a few maybe aren't for me. I think the other one I'm really tempted to try as dauntless first of all because it's free to play secondly, because as I know, and thirdly, I just think it looks really well done. I think I you know, I think those games that are free to play now are so well done that actually you're getting great value. Even if you don't spend a penny or even if you spend a 1010 pounds to you know, upgrade stuff, then it's still a lot of value at something you play. So I'm going to check dauntless. I'm excited to try that But yeah, I mean, my three probably aren't or four aren't probably everybody's I suspect most people will be excited about Axiom Verge. I think they'll be excited by Streets of Rage for which I am. by them. They're probably my standards. Was

Anton Winters 41:49

there anything on that you would have liked to have seen but didn't? Oh, am? I was suspecting we'd maybe see a little bit more of the new Hello whole night though yeah so song and I thought that would be there just because it's considering how far along it is in its development and hello we've seen all that. And but we did get green light which cow scratch that edge for me yo self that I'm dropping kisser another, another shuffle night they were awaiting details on

Mike Macdermid 42:21

what's going on john just released isn't there?

Anton Winters 42:23

Yeah, we got to release I'm trying to think what's our first game? There's so many treasure chest or wherever I

Mike Macdermid 42:29

think I think maybe that was the last one but I'm not sure I mean for me the ones that I would have liked to see I would like to see more from Undertale because what's the one called again?

 Anton Winters 42:39

delta and

Mike Macdermid 42:40

delta and so we've only got chapter one of delta and at the moment, right?

Anton Winters 42:44

Yeah, that was one I was camp expecting when we had the one more thing I was like, the there's nothing

Mike Macdermid 42:50

I thought it was going to be out today. I thought they were gonna say yeah, and we've got chapter two and three of delta room rates go up. So I'm a bit disappointed. We haven't had more Delta room because I feel like the time I get to play the next Are the rest of the game will have forgotten all have to start again which is fine because it's great. So but despite that, and also I would have liked to seen one of my favourite indie titles or to my favourite indie titles west of loathing and A Night in the Woods I would have liked to have seen something for as a sequel, especially Night in the Woods I think there's a lot in that world could be explored west of loathing is just a fun title. So I'd like to seen something similar done from the same developers. But a Night in the Woods such a brilliant story, I would have loved to have seen something like a night in the woods to our day in the woods.

Anton Winters 43:33

I'm just know that we're talking about with more and more games that have been announced the previous months or just call them back to me on like, go on, then hide the face meaning taker. Oh, yeah, no, there's just so many. I know. Well,

Mike Macdermid 43:43

you know what, I think you did a really good job. I don't think it was. Maybe boyfriend dungeons was my weakest link in that one. But I think there's not much in there that you could say no, that's an absolute, you know, terrible, terrible title. There's no way I'm looking at that. I think. I think they were all fairly strong.

 Anton Winters 43:59

Yeah. The games which I felt were weaker links like as you say boyfriend dungeon and count bacon switch there so games that if we go another trailer I think there's room for them to impress and yeah none of them were standout all this one's a countdown not good game like how think he'll set first count the first Monday to right that we covered and we had that other skateboarding game name and we're like oh yeah was this doing mobile game no this this time around block spotless absolutely no

Mike Macdermid  44:30

really really good direct this evening and much better than I then I probably expected to be perfectly honest yeah listen well done to to the team that organised that directors I think we were all pleasantly surprised by Anton we are going to be back on Sunday for another episode our final final proper episode of season one will have a couple of specials to go but our final episode of season one can I just mentioned before I go that Football Manager touch 2020 came out today on the switch.

Anton Winters 44:58

I saw that I know it's like So fair, be there, this exciting specials we have four seasons in between Season One Two aren't happening by

 Mike Macdermid 45:07

now. And the funny thing is that with 2020 has been really well reviewed the wreckin It's a real improvement on 2019 which is great because 2019 little bit slow. I'm sure I just didn't give it enough time and I love football manager games, but I think this one I'm gonna have to really time this because I'm going to spend far too many hours so I'm not gonna buy it yet, but I will buy it at some point. Because it does look it does look good. It came out today. But price point again a little bit pricey and he's 2999 and that's a bit it's a bit much.

 Anton Winters 45:36

But we'll see the thing I love about this is when whenever you mentioned football manager I'm like, Oh, this is what people must think when I chat about American Truck Simulator and say skyline.
